WP-25 not right for my application

My wp-25 is working perfectly but not what I expected. The way my rock work is set up the pump is just too strong for my liking. I have a 60g, 36" long. The pump was really beating up my LPS and ever since I had it on my tank most of my corals looked pissed. I tried a bunch of different positions and I was not satisfied with any of them. Even on W1 50% it seemed to strong. I was intending on using else mode but it literally looked like the flesh was getting blown off my LPS.

Overall it is a great product but just wrong for my application. It was very quiet for the 2 weeks I had it on my tank.

I think I am going to put it back in the box for now and wait until I get an apex system sometime close to Xmas and use the mod to hook the pump to the APEX. This way I can have more control ability and do something similar to else mode but with much less power.

I personally do not like the pulsing motion of the wave features and that was the only function I could utilize without having way too much flow.

One last observation I made was the flow in my tank was so strong that it seemed my tank was actually getting more dirty because the current seemed to be forcing the detritus right passed the overflow and it was not getting sucked into the sump. But continued to swirl around the tank. The current passed the front of the overflow was stronger then the suction from the overflow and not as much was getting sucked over.

I purchased two in a group buy direct from manufacturer. It was about $62 shipped each. I installed only one of the WP25 in a 36" 65g and I love it. Have it bottom back corner and have it angled up and towards front. Have tried both w1 and else. Just added the light sensor last night to test it. Lights out and the flow cuts down. So far so good. You can try to angle against the return flow to help.

I think my real issue is my rock work. Its stacked pretty high and its free standing across my whole tank. only one point is touching the back wall and that is on my over flow. I tried to get the WP on my back wall but I can only have it in the top 1/4 of my tank otherwise it wont clear my rock work. When I do a tank upgrade I plan on doing a much more minimal aquascape with larger pieces if rock.

I also tried using a other power heads to offset the WP with little success. My other two power heads are koralia 1150GPH so with them fighting the WP large swirls were beating up my coral and blowing my sand away.

The list goes on for an upgrade.
1)BB
2)More minimal rock work

I actually removed my other powerhead because of the wp25. So far so good.

Like you always looking to upgrade....I just missed a 90 tank and stand for 100.00 on my local reef club....

Maybe next time...

Good luck...

I just dont understand the fish street site. Half of its in english. But then you go do try and place the order its all in anotheer language. If someone can help me on that ill order one tonight. Reef breeders had them but tunze sent them the lawyers after them and they dont have them anymore

Did you try placing it on the side tank wall pointing straight at the front of the tank? If it's blasting straight against a wall it should break up the force of the flow a lot with still giving you the random flow you are looking for.

Yes I tried that and it was the best position I had found. I have some decent sized LPS colonies and they are all forced to be in the front half of mt tank because of the way my rock structure is. They were just getting pounded. With the WP my tank was more of a hectic reef getting pounded by waves. Without the WP it seems to be a tranquil scene with the corals swaying back and forth. My corals are way more open with out it. Everything seems to be much happier.

Like the old saying "Don't fix whats not broken". I have been keeping a successful tank without the WP. Then I put the WP in place and it did nothing but stress my corals and my self out. I was constantly trying to fine tune it to get the best flow and it was driving me crazy.

When being asked to sell it, I would consider selling it with paypal + trade with a low GPH koralia for behind my rock work.

I wouldn't let my experience discourage you. It is a great product from what I saw. Maybe you can figure out how to use it better then me. Everyone else seems to love them, even with smaller tanks. W1 at 50% was reasonable in the tank but anything more was too much. Originally I had no intentions of using it on any of the W modes because I do not like the look of the back and forth motion. It is too repetitive for my liking. I wanted the randomness of else. I didn't do my research good enough first because I thought you can run and mode on 50% but you can only run 50% and 75% on w1.
